outline of the plays

 Kyogen: Shimizu (「清水」)

Taro-kaja(the first servant) is ordered by his master to go to a spring (清 水 Shimizu) in the fields to pump clear spring water for a tea ceremony. He feels it is a troublesome job, and fears he might have to do the same job again every time when his master holds a tea ceremony. He declines the order once, but is forced to go out to the field. He is handed a wooden bucket, which is the master's family treasure. However, Taro comes back without the bucket, pretending he has been attacked by an Oni(Japanese troll) in the field. The family bucket is very important to the master, and the master decides to go to the field to retrieve the bucket. Taro gets there ahead of the master, and scares the master by pretending to be an Oni with a mask. The master runs away, begging for his life. Afterwards, the master starts to doubt whether the Oni was real or not, because all the things that the Oni threatened him to do had been Taro's wishes. In addition, he notices that the Oni's voice sounded just like Taro’s. The master decides to go to the field again to make sure what he had seen. Taro tries to threaten the master again, but this time, he is unmasked, and runs away, chased by the master.

 Noh: Fujito (「藤戸」)

The Genji commander, Sasaki No Saburo Moritsuna, has been awarded the fief of Kojima for his meritorious service at the Battle of Fujito (藤戸 Fujito). He enters the fief, where an old woman appears and accuses him of killing her son in the battle. Though at first he denies it, Moritsuna eventually admits that he killed her son. The woman deeply grieves over the death of her twenty-year-old only son, and begs the lord to ’Let me die like my son’. Moritsuna promises to pray for her son, and sends the woman home. Afterwards, when he is praying for the woman's son, the son's appears, when he had been killed. However, because of Moritsuna's unexpected prayers, the son is able to die in salvation in the end.
